What Is STPP Used For?
Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), chemical formula Na5P3O10, is one of the most widely used phosphate chemicals in the world. It is a white powder or granular product best known as a builder in detergents, but its water-softening, dispersing and buffering properties make it useful across several industries. The right product depends on the grade: technical grade STPP and food grade STPP are produced and controlled to different standards.
STPP in Detergents and Laundry Products
The largest use of STPP is in powder laundry detergents and dishwashing formulations. As a builder, it softens wash water by binding calcium and magnesium ions, helps keep removed soil suspended so it does not settle back onto fabric, and provides alkalinity that supports the surfactants. These functions are why STPP content and quality — assay, P2O5 level, whiteness and particle size — directly affect finished detergent performance. Our guide on how to choose STPP for detergent production explains the key specifications in detail.
STPP in Cleaning Products
Institutional and industrial cleaners also use STPP for the same reasons: it improves cleaning efficiency in hard water, supports degreasing formulations and helps control mineral deposits on surfaces and equipment. It appears in car wash products, floor cleaners and general-purpose cleaning compounds.
Industrial and Water-Related Uses
Beyond cleaning, technical grade STPP is used as a dispersant and processing aid in ceramics, as a water treatment chemical, and in applications such as paper processing, textile treatment and drilling fluids, where controlling mineral ions and keeping solids dispersed matters.
Food Grade STPP Uses
Food grade STPP is a different product in regulatory terms. It is used as a moisture-retention and quality-improvement additive in processed meat, ham and sausage, seafood such as shrimp and fish, and surimi products, where it helps texture and yield. Food applications require material produced and certified to food additive standards, with strict limits on heavy metals and fluoride.
Choosing the Right STPP
Start from the application: detergent and industrial uses call for technical grade; anything entering food requires food grade with proper documentation. Then confirm the specification items that affect your process — P2O5 content, whiteness, granularity and iron level.
