How to Choose STPP for Detergent Production: Key Specifications

For detergent manufacturers, STPP is often the single most important purchased chemical: it is the builder that makes the whole formulation work. Two STPP offers at different prices are rarely the same product in practice. This guide explains the specifications that actually affect detergent production, so buyers can compare quotations on equal terms.

P₂O₅ Content and Assay

The headline numbers are the Na₅P₃O₁₀ assay and the P₂O₅ content (around 57% for standard technical grade). Lower assay usually means lower effective builder per ton — a cheaper price per ton can be more expensive per unit of performance.

Whiteness

Whiteness matters for the appearance of the finished powder. Premium detergent brands specify higher whiteness; economy formulations tolerate less. Agree the whiteness value in the specification rather than discovering it on arrival.

Particle Size and Granulation

Powder flow, dusting and mixing behavior depend on particle size distribution. Granular STPP suits some production lines and spray-dried processes better than fine powder. State the mesh range your process needs.

Phase I / Phase II Ratio and Dissolution

STPP exists in two crystal phases. Phase I dissolves fast but can cause caking in finished detergent; Phase II dissolves more slowly. The phase ratio affects both production and the end product's storage behavior — an item worth confirming with the supplier for powder detergent applications.

Iron Content and Water Insolubles

Higher iron can discolor product and affect formulation color; water-insoluble matter should be low to avoid residue. Both are standard COA items — check them on the certificate, not only in the offer.
